Return to Killie

Looking around for somewhere to visit, my eyes returned to Kilmarnock, a place I visited early on in my retirement, in November. One of the places I noticed but failed to visit was Dean Castle and its Country Park.

The castle and park lies to the east of Kilmarnock which itself is only 20 miles from home so it was a pleasant enough trip there. Although the castle is 14th-century, it has the appearance to me of a Hollywood reconstruction or a rich man’s stately home. Probably the large windows which would be vulnerable in a real siege. (The castle was restored in the 20th century after falling into disrepair which would explain the appearance.)

Inside the castle are some interesting collections of arms, armour and musical instruments.

After viewing the castle (free, by the way), I made my way back to the car, through the Country Park which is very beautiful with many pieces of apparatus for children to play on. Below is a picture of the lovely lake there.

In the end, a pleasant couple of hours without a long journey in the process. No doubt I will return again.
